Head of innovation
Since 1990, Barry has concentrated on sustainable production, beginning with the design and manufacture of toolboxes and cable reels for Argos and Homebase. By using recycled material, local underused production capacity and struggling small companies, the costs of centralisation, high overheads and demanding investors were avoided and the UK price of both products was significantly reduced.
The benefits of this strategy for the Developing World became apparent through designing and manufacturing a highly stackable emergency water carrier for Oxfam that was chosen as an exemplar product, alongside the Rolls Royce Trent Engine, for the Millennium Products Initiative.
For the last 20 years, the potential of combining this manufacturing strategy with the largely unappreciated value of highly effective photon concentration has driven Barry’s initiatives. Building on the 50 year old but under-exploited field of non-imaging optics, he has applied his experience across a series of EU and UK funded projects and established a personal reputation with some of the finest European research groups such as Imperial and the Fraunhofer Institute.
